That path is taken when the object is marked as no longer needed. Code analysis revealed a possibility of the i915 TTM page vector container being replaced with a new instance inside a function that purges content of the object, should it be still busy. That function is called, indirectly via a more general function that changes the object's placement and caching policy, ---truncated---

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in the Linux kernel involves a potential use-after-free (UAF) issue in the TTM (Translation Table Maps) object purge function for Intel i915 graphics drivers. The bug occurs when the bo->ttm object is modified by ttm_bo_validate() before casting it to an i915_tt object, leading to incorrect pointer handling and potential memory corruption.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the Linux kernel's i915 graphics driver and TTM memory management. Detection requires checking kernel logs for general protection faults or Oops messages related to the i915 module. Monitor for crashes during heavy graphics usage, particularly on systems with Intel DG2 GPUs. Check dmesg output for errors like 'general protection fault' with non-canonical addresses.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could cause system crashes, data corruption, or privilege escalation if exploited. Users running heavy graphics workloads on affected Intel i915 GPU systems may experience instability or security breaches due to memory corruption.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability is a use-after-free (UAF) issue in the Linux kernel's i915 graphics driver, specifically related to TTM object purging. It does not directly impact compliance with standards like GDPR or HIPAA, as those focus on data protection and privacy rather than kernel memory management vulnerabilities.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest kernel updates from your Linux distribution to ensure the patched i915 driver is installed. If using a custom kernel, update to version 6.18.8 or later. Avoid heavy graphics workloads on Intel DG2 GPUs until patched. Monitor system stability and kernel logs for signs of the issue.
