Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: idpf: fix read_dev_clk_lock spinlock init in idpf_ptp_init() In idpf_ptp_init(), read_dev_clk_lock is initialized after ptp_schedule_worker() had already been called (and after idpf_ptp_settime64() could reach the lock). The PTP aux worker fires immediately upon scheduling and can call into idpf_ptp_read_src_clk_reg_direct(), which takes spin_lock(&ptp->read_dev_clk_lock) on an uninitialized lock, triggering the lockdep "non-static key" warning: [12973.796587] idpf 0000:83:00.0: Device HW Reset initiated [12974.094507] INFO: trying to register non-static key. ... Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a race condition in the Linux kernel's idpf driver related to PTP (Precision Time Protocol) initialization. The spinlock 'read_dev_clk_lock' is initialized after the PTP auxiliary worker thread starts, which can lead to accessing an uninitialized lock. This triggers a 'non-static key' warning in lockdep, indicating a potential deadlock or memory corruption scenario.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the Linux kernel's idpf driver and manifests as a lockdep warning when the read_dev_clk_lock spinlock is accessed before initialization. Detection requires checking kernel logs for the non-static key warning or inspecting the idpf driver initialization sequence.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could cause system instability, crashes, or unpredictable behavior due to improper synchronization in the PTP subsystem. It may lead to kernel warnings, performance degradation, or even system hangs if the race condition is triggered during normal operation.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly affect compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, or similar standards. It is a Linux kernel driver issue related to improper spinlock initialization in the idpf network driver, which could cause system instability or crashes but does not involve data exposure or privacy violations.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the kernel patch that moves the spin_lock_init() call for read_dev_clk_lock before ptp_schedule_worker() is invoked. Update to a kernel version containing the fix or manually patch the idpf driver code.
