Executive Summary

This is a use-after-free (UAF) vulnerability in the Linux kernel's Bluetooth L2CAP implementation. It occurs when l2cap_chan_timeout() tries to access a Bluetooth connection object that has already been freed. The timer function runs asynchronously and may attempt to lock a mutex on a freed connection, causing a system crash or potential privilege escalation.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the Linux kernel's Bluetooth L2CAP implementation and may not have direct detection commands. Monitor kernel logs for KASAN reports indicating slab-use-after-free in l2cap_chan_timeout or mutex_lock operations. Check for Bluetooth-related crashes or hangs in system logs.

Impact Analysis

An attacker within Bluetooth range could exploit this to crash the system or potentially execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges. This could lead to denial of service or complete system compromise on affected Linux systems using vulnerable Bluetooth stacks.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability is a use-after-free in the Linux kernel's Bluetooth L2CAP implementation. It does not directly affect compliance with GDPR or HIPAA, as those standards focus on data protection and privacy controls rather than kernel-level memory safety issues. However, if exploited, it could lead to system instability or crashes, potentially disrupting security controls that rely on system integrity.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the kernel patch that fixes this issue by ensuring l2cap_conn holds a reference to the connection. Update to a patched kernel version or apply the specific patch for CVE-2026-64434. Disable Bluetooth if not in use as a temporary workaround.
