Race Condition in Data::SortedSet::Shared for Perl

Description

Data::SortedSet::Shared versions before 0.03 for Perl create a world-readable mmap backing file and open it without O_EXCL or O_NOFOLLOW. The segment is created in sortedset.h with open(path, O_RDWR|O_CREAT, 0666). The mode is 0666, so under the default umask 022 the file is created mode 0644 (world-readable). O_NOFOLLOW is absent, so a symlink planted at the path is followed, and O_EXCL is absent, so the open silently uses a pre-planted file instead of failing. A "Shared" segment naturally lives in a shared directory such as /tmp or /dev/shm, where any local user can read the IPC payloads stored in the world-readable segment, and a pre-planted file or symlink at the path lets a local attacker win a pre-creation race or redirect the open.

CWE ID Description
CWE-732 The product specifies permissions for a security-critical resource in a way that allows that resource to be read or modified by unintended actors.
CWE-59 The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects the Perl module Data::SortedSet::Shared before version 0.03. It creates a shared memory file that is readable by any user on the system due to weak file permissions (0644). The file is created without proper safeguards like O_EXCL or O_NOFOLLOW, allowing attackers to exploit race conditions or symlink attacks to access sensitive data.

Detection Guidance

Check for world-readable mmap backing files in shared directories like /tmp or /dev/shm. Look for files with mode 0644 created by Data::SortedSet::Shared versions before 0.03. Use commands like 'find /tmp -type f -perm 0644 -ls' or 'ls -la /dev/shm' to inspect file permissions.

Impact Analysis

If you use this Perl module, an attacker with local access could read sensitive data stored in shared memory, such as session tokens or IPC payloads. This could lead to unauthorized access to your application or data, depending on what is stored in the shared memory.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate compliance requirements like GDPR or HIPAA by exposing sensitive data to unauthorized users. GDPR requires protecting personal data, while HIPAA mandates safeguarding protected health information. A breach could result in legal penalties or reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Data::SortedSet::Shared to version 0.03 or later. Remove any existing world-readable mmap backing files in shared directories. Ensure proper file permissions are set to prevent unauthorized access.
