Executive Summary

This is a command injection vulnerability where an unauthenticated remote attacker can inject a command into the system configuration. The injected command is then executed with root privileges due to improper neutralization of special elements.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability allows unauthenticated remote command injection as root due to improper input neutralization. Detection requires inspecting system logs for unexpected command executions, unusual network traffic, or unauthorized configuration changes. Check for suspicious processes running as root and review any exposed configuration interfaces or services that may accept remote input.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could take full control of the affected system, install malware, steal data, or disrupt services. Since the command runs as root, the impact includes complete system compromise and potential lateral movement within a network.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability likely violates compliance requirements for data protection and system security. GDPR and HIPAA mandate strong access controls and protection against unauthorized command execution. Exploitation could lead to data breaches, resulting in fines and legal consequences.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately apply vendor patches or updates to address the improper neutralization of special elements. Disable unnecessary services or network interfaces to reduce attack surface. Monitor system logs for suspicious command injection attempts or unauthorized root access.
