Executive Summary

CVE-2026-7868 is a privilege escalation vulnerability in IBM OPENBMC firmware. It allows ReadOnly users to gain administrator privileges through the BMC's HTTPS interface due to incorrect authorization checks.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking the firmware version of IBM Power Systems running OPENBMC. For Power 11 systems, verify if the firmware is between FW1110.00 and FW1110.20. For Power 10 systems, check if the firmware is between FW1060.00 and FW1060.71. Use the BMC interface or system management tools to inspect the current firmware version.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with ReadOnly access could escalate to admin privileges, potentially gaining full control over the IBM Power System. This could allow unauthorized system modifications, data access, or disruption of operations.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or control of systems handling sensitive data, potentially violating compliance requirements for data protection and access controls in standards like GDPR or HIPAA.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the firmware to the latest patched version. For Power 11 systems, upgrade to FW1110.30(1110_145) or newer. For Power 10 systems, upgrade to FW1060.72(1060_177), FW1060.80(1060_185), or newer. After updating, verify local BMC user accounts to ensure no unauthorized privilege escalation occurred.
