Detection Guidance

Detecting CVE-2026-8085 on your system involves checking for the presence of vulnerable versions of Arenaยฎ Simulation software. Since the vulnerability affects versions V17.00.00 and prior, you should verify the installed version of the software.

  • Check the installed version of Arenaยฎ Simulation by navigating to the software's 'Help' or 'About' menu to confirm the version number.
  • On Windows systems, you can also check the version of model.exe (Siman component) by right-clicking the executable, selecting 'Properties,' and reviewing the 'Details' tab for the file version.
  • Scan your system for files associated with Arenaยฎ Simulation, particularly model.exe, and verify their versions against the vulnerable versions listed (V17.00.00 and prior).

Network-based detection is limited for this vulnerability since it requires user interaction (opening a malicious file). However, you can monitor for unusual file activity or unexpected processes spawned by model.exe.

Mitigation Strategies

The primary mitigation for CVE-2026-8085 is to upgrade to the corrected version of Arenaยฎ Simulation.

  • Upgrade Arenaยฎ Simulation to version V17.00.01 or later, as this version contains the fix for the vulnerability.
  • If upgrading is not immediately possible, restrict access to Arenaยฎ Simulation and avoid opening untrusted files with the software until the upgrade can be performed.
  • Educate users about the risks of opening files from untrusted sources, as exploitation requires user interaction.

No workarounds are available for this vulnerability, so upgrading is the only recommended action.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-8085 is a memory corruption vulnerability in Rockwell Automation's Arenaยฎ Simulation software, specifically in the model.exe (Siman) component. The issue arises from improper validation of user-supplied data, which can lead to an out-of-bounds write. This flaw allows an attacker to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current process if they convince a user to open a malicious file.

The vulnerability affects versions V17.00.00 and prior of Arenaยฎ Simulation. It has been assigned a CVSS 4.0 base score of 7.0, indicating a high severity. The issue was discovered by an external researcher and has been fixed in version V17.00.01.

Impact Analysis

If you are using an affected version of Arenaยฎ Simulation (V17.00.00 or prior), this vulnerability could have serious consequences. An attacker could exploit it to execute arbitrary code on your system with the privileges of the current process. This means the attacker could potentially take control of your system, steal sensitive data, or install malware.

  • Arbitrary code execution: The attacker could run malicious code on your system.
  • Data theft: Sensitive information stored on your system could be accessed or exfiltrated.
  • System compromise: The attacker could gain control over your system, leading to further attacks or disruptions.

The attack requires user interaction, such as opening a malicious file, so awareness and caution when handling files from untrusted sources are critical.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could impact compliance with several common standards and regulations, depending on how the affected software is used in your organization.

  • GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation): If the vulnerable software processes or stores personal data of EU citizens, a successful exploit could lead to unauthorized access or disclosure of this data. This would violate GDPR's requirements for data protection and could result in significant fines.
  • HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act): If the software is used in a healthcare environment to handle protected health information (PHI), an exploit could lead to unauthorized access or disclosure of PHI. This would violate HIPAA's privacy and security rules, potentially resulting in penalties.
  • Other industry standards: Depending on your industry, this vulnerability could also affect compliance with standards like ISO 27001, NIST, or sector-specific regulations that require protection against unauthorized access and data breaches.

To maintain compliance, it is essential to apply the available patch or upgrade to the corrected version of the software as soon as possible. Additionally, organizations should review their incident response plans to ensure they can address potential breaches effectively.
