Executive Summary

CVE-2021-43717 is a vulnerability in the Epson iProjection Android app (v3.2.6) where hard-coded credentials are embedded in the app. These credentials allow unauthorized access to Epson projectors with the iProjection function, enabling attackers to control the device remotely without physical access or the projector's configured password.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if the Epson iProjection app version 3.2.6 is installed on Android devices. Extract the APK file and decompile it to search for hard-coded credentials like the username 'EPSONMOBILE' and a password. Verify if projectors on the network allow access using these credentials via the Web Control interface.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to gain full control over your Epson projector, potentially displaying unauthorized content, disrupting presentations, or accessing sensitive information if the projector is connected to a network with other devices.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Epson iProjection app to a version that removes hard-coded credentials. Avoid using static credentials in client applications. Implement per-device authentication methods like pairing or PIN-based access for projectors. Disable the iProjection function on projectors if not required.
