Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a session fixation issue in the Welcart e-Commerce WordPress plugin before version 2.12.1. The plugin does not regenerate session identifiers when a user authenticates, instead setting the session ID from a user-supplied request parameter. This allows an unauthenticated attacker to fixate a shop member's session and take over their customer account after the victim logs in through a crafted request.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Welcart e-Commerce plugin version is below 2.12.1. You can verify the installed version via WordPress admin panel under Plugins or by running the command: wp plugin list --name=welcart-e-commerce. If the version is outdated, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could hijack a customer's account by fixingating their session ID before they log in. This could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive customer data, such as order history, personal information, or payment details. The attacker might also perform actions on behalf of the victim, like placing orders or modifying account settings.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and potentially HIPAA if health-related data is involved. Organizations using the vulnerable plugin may face compliance breaches, legal penalties, and reputational damage due to compromised customer data.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Welcart e-Commerce plugin to version 2.12.1 or later. Disable any suspicious user sessions and reset all user passwords. Monitor for unauthorized access or account takeovers.
