Executive Summary

This vulnerability involves a lack of authentication for Very High Frequency Data Link messages, allowing rogue ground stations to inject CPDLC messages. This can lead to unexpected or misleading clearances and potential confusion for pilots. The attack can be executed remotely over radio frequency.

Detection Guidance

Detection requires monitoring Very High Frequency Data Link (VHF DL) traffic for unauthorized CPDLC message injections. Use spectrum analyzers to detect rogue ground stations transmitting on aviation VHF frequencies. Inspect network logs for unexpected or unusual CPDLC message patterns.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could result in unauthorized or misleading instructions being sent to pilots, potentially causing unsafe flight conditions or operational disruptions. It may lead to incorrect clearances, miscommunication, or pilot confusion during flight operations.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially impact compliance with standards requiring secure communication and data integrity, such as GDPR and HIPAA, by enabling unauthorized message injection that may lead to misleading or incorrect data being processed or transmitted.

Mitigation Strategies

Implement authentication for VHF DL messages to prevent unauthorized injections. Deploy intrusion detection systems to monitor and block suspicious CPDLC traffic. Ensure pilot training includes awareness of potential misleading clearances from unauthorized sources.
