Executive Summary

This vulnerability involves injecting false emergency or status messages into the Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC) system. Attackers can remotely transmit misleading information over radio frequency, causing confusion among flight crews, air traffic controllers, and ground operations. This may lead to misallocation of resources and improper response actions.

Detection Guidance

Detection of this vulnerability requires monitoring for unauthorized CPDLC message injections. Use network traffic analyzers like Wireshark to inspect CPDLC traffic for anomalies. Check for unexpected message formats or sources. Log and correlate unusual activity with flight operations data.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could disrupt aviation operations by causing incorrect decisions based on false data. Flight crews might take unnecessary actions, air traffic controllers could misdirect aircraft, and ground operations may allocate resources inefficiently, potentially leading to safety risks or delays.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly affect compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, or similar standards as it pertains to aviation communication systems rather than data privacy or healthcare records. The impact is operational and safety-related.

Mitigation Strategies

Implement strict authentication for CPDLC message sources. Use encryption to secure communications. Deploy intrusion detection systems to monitor for false messages. Train personnel to verify message authenticity and report suspicious activity.
