Executive Summary

This is a race condition vulnerability in the Palo Alto Networks GlobalProtect client for macOS. It allows a locally authenticated low-privileged attacker to escalate their privileges to root.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the installed version of the GlobalProtect client on macOS. Compare it against the affected versions: 6.3.x prior to 6.3.3-h14, 6.2.x prior to 6.2.8-h13, or 6.0.x prior to 6.0.15. Run commands like 'system_profiler SPSoftwareDataType' or 'pkgutil --pkg-info com.paloaltonetworks.GlobalProtect' to verify the version.

Impact Analysis

A successful exploit could allow an attacker with local access to gain full control of the affected macOS system, potentially leading to unauthorized data access, system manipulation, or further network compromise.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly affect compliance with GDPR or HIPAA as it is a local privilege escalation issue with limited impact. However, organizations must ensure proper patching to maintain security controls required by these standards.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade the GlobalProtect client on macOS to the latest patched versions: 6.3.3-h14 or later, 6.2.8-h13 or later, or 6.0.15 or later. Ensure no active exploitation is occurring by monitoring system logs for unusual privilege escalation attempts.
