Executive Summary

This vulnerability is in the Lenxel WP WordPress theme version 1.0.31 or earlier. It allows unauthenticated attackers to reset any user's password, including administrators, by exploiting a missing authorization check during the password-reset process. Only a CSRF nonce is validated, which does not prevent unauthorized access.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if the Lenxel WP WordPress theme version 1.0.31 or earlier is installed. Inspect the theme's password-reset functionality for missing authorization checks. Look for unauthenticated password reset requests in server logs or network traffic.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could take over any user account, including admin accounts, by resetting their password. This could lead to full control of the WordPress site, data theft, defacement, or malware distribution. Users may lose access to their accounts and sensitive data could be compromised.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and access control. Organizations may face fines, legal penalties, and reputational damage due to non-compliance with these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Lenxel WP WordPress theme to the latest version (1.0.31 or higher) to ensure the vulnerability is patched. If an update is not available, consider disabling the theme or replacing it with a secure alternative.
