Executive Summary

This is a reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the wpForo Forum WordPress plugin before version 3.1.2. It occurs because user profile fields are not properly sanitized or escaped before being displayed in an HTML attribute on the public participant profile page. This allows users with subscriber-level access to inject malicious JavaScript code that executes when other users, including administrators, view the profile.

Detection Guidance

Check for unauthorized JavaScript in user profile fields on the wpForo plugin. Inspect the public participant profile page HTML for suspicious attributes or scripts. Look for subscriber accounts with unusual profile content.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with subscriber access could steal session cookies, redirect users to malicious sites, or perform actions on their behalf. Visitors viewing a compromised profile may have their browsers hijacked, leading to unauthorized access to sensitive data or account takeover if they are logged-in administrators.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality principles. For HIPAA, it may compromise protected health information integrity. Organizations using this plugin may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage due to insufficient data protection measures.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the wpForo plugin to version 3.1.2 or later. Remove or sanitize any suspicious JavaScript from user profiles. Review subscriber accounts for unauthorized changes. Consider temporarily disabling user profile editing until patched.
