Executive Summary

WatchGuard Dimension versions below 2.3.1 are vulnerable to a denial-of-service attack where sending a high volume of TCP SYN packets to the log listening service causes packet loss and reduced availability for legitimate users.

Detection Guidance

Monitor network traffic for unusually high volumes of TCP SYN packets directed at the log listening service port. Use tools like tcpdump or Wireshark to capture and analyze traffic. Check system logs for service degradation or crashes during high TCP SYN packet loads.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability can lead to service disruption, including packet loss and reduced availability for legitimate users. Impact is less severe if the server is behind a firewall or restricted network.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by reducing system availability due to denial-of-service conditions. GDPR requires data processing systems to ensure availability and resilience, while HIPAA mandates safeguards for data accessibility. A DoS attack may disrupt these requirements.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Upgrade WatchGuard Dimension to version 2.3.1 or later as recommended by the vendor.
  • Deploy the server behind a firewall with rate-limiting protections to reduce the impact of TCP SYN floods.
