Executive Summary

This is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Divi WordPress theme versions 5.0 to 5.8.1. It occurs in the Social Media Follow module's Skype URL setting, where user input is not properly escaped before being stored. Attackers with contributor-level access or higher can inject malicious JavaScript into link attributes. When a higher-privileged user views the post, the script executes.

Detection Guidance

Check Divi theme version. If using versions 5.0 to 5.8.1, the system is vulnerable. Inspect posts for injected JavaScript in Social Media Follow module Skype URL settings. Review user roles for contributors or higher with access to edit posts.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal session cookies, perform actions on behalf of the user, or deface the website. Administrators viewing a compromised post may unknowingly execute the injected script, leading to potential data breaches or unauthorized access to the WordPress admin panel.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's data protection requirements or HIPAA's security rules for protected health information. Organizations may face fines or penalties for failing to protect user data due to such vulnerabilities.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Divi theme to version 5.9.0 or later immediately. Remove or restrict contributor-level access to post editing if not required. Audit posts for suspicious JavaScript in Social Media Follow module settings.
