Executive Summary

A low privileged remote attacker can hijack an active administrative session without knowing the administrator password. They do this by extracting live plaintext session identifiers from downloadable error log archives.

Detection Guidance

Check for unusual administrative session activity or unauthorized access to error log archives. Monitor for unexpected plaintext session identifier extraction in logs or network traffic. Review system logs for suspicious download requests of error log files.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain full control of an administrative session, allowing them to perform unauthorized actions such as modifying system settings, accessing sensitive data, or installing malware. This could lead to data breaches or system compromise.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Organizations may face legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage due to non-compliance.

Mitigation Strategies

Disable plaintext session identifier storage in error logs. Restrict access to administrative session data and error log archives. Implement session token encryption and enforce session expiration policies. Review and update access controls for log files.
