Executive Summary

The s2Member WordPress plugin before version 260805 has a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability. It fails to escape certain shortcode attributes before outputting them in an inline script context. This allows users with contributor-level access to inject malicious JavaScript code that executes when a viewer opens the post.

Detection Guidance

Check if the s2Member plugin version is below 260805. Inspect WordPress posts for suspicious JavaScript in shortcode attributes. Use commands like 'wp plugin list' to verify plugin versions or scan for modified files.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with contributor access could inject JavaScript to perform unauthorized actions, steal user data, or take control of the affected WordPress site. Visitors viewing the post would unknowingly execute the malicious script.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, compromising personal or sensitive data. Such breaches may violate GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health information) regulations, potentially resulting in legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the s2Member plugin to version 260805 or later immediately. Remove or restrict contributor-level access to untrusted users until the update is applied.
