Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects the WP 2FA WordPress plugin before version 4.1.0. It allows an attacker who knows a user's password to bypass two-factor authentication by exploiting a flaw in the passkeys provider method. This means the attacker can gain full access to the account, including administrator accounts, without completing the second authentication step.

Detection Guidance

Check the installed version of the WP 2FA plugin in your WordPress admin panel under Plugins. If the version is below 4.1.0, the vulnerability is present. You can also use WP-CLI with the command: wp plugin list | grep wp-2fa to verify the version.

Impact Analysis

If you use the WP 2FA plugin version below 4.1.0, an attacker who already has your password could bypass 2FA and gain full access to your account. This includes sensitive administrator accounts, potentially leading to data theft, unauthorized changes, or complete site compromise.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal or sensitive data, violating compliance requirements under GDPR and HIPAA. Organizations using the affected plugin may face legal penalties, data breach notifications, and reputational damage due to compromised data integrity and confidentiality.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the WP 2FA plugin to version 4.1.0 or later immediately. Disable the plugin temporarily if an update is not immediately available. Review user accounts for unauthorized access and enforce password resets for all users.
