Assigner: Red Hat, Inc.

Description

A flaw was found in EAP's jboss-remoting. A remote unauthenticated attacker who can reach :8080 (or :9990, or :4447) and complete an Upgrade: jboss-remoting handshake can cause OOM errors that degrade requests server-wide, leading to denial of service.

CWE ID Description
CWE-190 The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This occurs when an integer value is incremented to a value that is too large to store in the associated representation. When this occurs, the value may become a very small or negative number.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is in EAP's jboss-remoting component. A remote unauthenticated attacker can exploit it by completing an Upgrade: jboss-remoting handshake on ports 8080, 9990, or 4447. This causes integer overflow errors in the MessageReader, leading to out-of-memory conditions that degrade server-wide performance and result in a denial of service.

Detection Guidance

Monitor network traffic on ports 8080, 9990, and 4447 for unusual handshake attempts or jboss-remoting protocol activity. Check server logs for out-of-memory errors or performance degradation on these ports.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability allows an attacker to cause severe performance degradation or complete denial of service on affected servers. It can reduce the efficiency of HTTP, EJB, and JMS requests by up to 200 times, leading to system unavailability and potential business disruption.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest patches or upgrades for jboss-remoting. If patches are unavailable, restrict access to ports 8080, 9990, and 4447 using firewalls. Consider disabling the jboss-remoting handshake upgrade feature if possible.
