Executive Summary

The Ajax Search Lite WordPress plugin before version 4.14.5 has a vulnerability where it does not properly prevent deserialization of untrusted input. This allows unauthenticated attackers to perform PHP Object Injection. If another plugin or theme provides a suitable POP chain, attackers could exploit this to achieve Remote Code Execution.

Detection Guidance

Check if the Ajax Search Lite plugin version is below 4.14.5 by inspecting WordPress admin panel or using WP-CLI command: wp plugin list | grep ajax_search_lite. Look for suspicious activity in server logs or network traffic targeting the Search Statistics REST endpoint.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to execute arbitrary code on your WordPress site if a suitable POP chain exists in another installed plugin or theme. This could lead to full site compromise, data theft, or further attacks.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access and data breaches, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and security. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Ajax Search Lite plugin to version 4.14.5 or later immediately. If updating is not possible, consider disabling the plugin temporarily until an update is applied. Review and restrict access to the Search Statistics REST endpoint if feasible.
