Executive Summary

This is an unauthenticated PHP Object Injection vulnerability in the Newsletters WordPress plugin before version 4.16. It occurs because the plugin does not properly restrict classes allowed during deserialization of values from public form submissions. Attackers can exploit this to inject arbitrary PHP objects without authentication.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the version of the Newsletters WordPress plugin. If it is below 4.16, the system is vulnerable. Use commands like 'wp plugin list' in WordPress or inspect the plugin directory for version details.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to execute arbitrary code on your server, potentially taking full control of your WordPress site. This could lead to data theft, site defacement, or being used as a pivot point to attack other systems.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access and data breaches, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and security. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, fines, and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Newsletters plugin to version 4.16 or later. If updating is not possible, consider disabling the plugin temporarily until an update can be applied.
