Executive Summary

This is a time-of-check to time-of-use (TOCTOU) race condition vulnerability in IBM AIX 7.2, 7.3, and IBM PowerVM VIOS 4.1. A local attacker could exploit this to execute arbitrary code by manipulating the timing between checking and using a resource.

Detection Guidance

Detection of this TOCTOU race condition vulnerability requires manual inspection of system binaries and processes. Check for unusual file access patterns or privilege escalation attempts in logs. IBM recommends reviewing system calls related to file operations and process execution for anomalies.

Impact Analysis

A local attacker with access to the system could gain elevated privileges or execute malicious code, potentially leading to unauthorized data access, system compromise, or further attacks within the environment.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, which may violate compliance requirements such as GDPR (data protection) or HIPAA (health information security), potentially resulting in legal penalties or reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply IBM-provided patches or updates for IBM AIX 7.2, 7.3, and PowerVM VIOS 4.1 to address the TOCTOU race condition. Monitor IBM's security advisories for specific patch availability and installation instructions.
