CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

IBM i 7.6, 7.5, and 7.4 are vulnerable to SQL injection due to improper handling of specially crafted SQL statements in Db2 Mirror. A remote attacker could exploit this to send malicious SQL commands, potentially allowing unauthorized access, data manipulation, deletion, or disclosure in the back-end database.

Detection Guidance

Detecting SQL injection vulnerabilities typically involves monitoring database logs for unusual queries or using specialized tools. For IBM i systems, check for unauthorized SQL commands in job logs or use IBM i Access Client Solutions to review database activity. IBM recommends applying patches SJ10910 (7.4), SJ10908 (7.5), or SJ10902 (7.6) as a detection measure.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow attackers to view, add, modify, or delete sensitive data in your database. It may lead to unauthorized access, data breaches, or corruption of critical information stored in IBM i systems.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, which may violate compliance requirements under GDPR, HIPAA, or other regulations. Unauthorized data access or disclosure could result in legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest IBM i patches immediately: SJ10910 for 7.4, SJ10908 for 7.5, or SJ10902 for 7.6. If patches are unavailable, upgrade to a supported IBM i version. Monitor database activity for suspicious SQL commands and restrict user privileges to minimize attack surface.
