CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability allows a remote authenticated attacker to modify data in certain SQL tables on IBM i systems due to improper neutralization of special elements used in an SQL command. This means the system fails to properly sanitize user input in SQL queries, allowing attackers to manipulate database contents.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to alter critical data in SQL tables, potentially leading to data corruption, unauthorized changes, or incorrect system behavior. This could affect business operations, reporting, or data integrity on affected IBM i systems.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data modifications, violating integrity requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. It may result in non-compliance due to potential data tampering, affecting data protection and audit controls.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply IBM i PTFs or updates to address the improper neutralization of SQL commands. Review and restrict access to SQL tables for authenticated users. Monitor database logs for unauthorized modifications.
