Executive Summary

IBM i 7.6, 7.5, 7.4, and 7.3 are vulnerable to a security bypass due to improper validation of user profile names in the Line Printer Daemon (LPD). A remote authenticated attacker can exploit this flaw to bypass security restrictions.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your IBM i system is running affected versions (7.3, 7.4, 7.5, or 7.6) and verify if the Line Printer Daemon (LPD) is enabled. Review installed PTFs to confirm if the fixes (SJ10878, SJ10917, SJ10934, SJ10935) are applied. Monitor network traffic for unauthorized access attempts targeting user profile validation.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain unauthorized access or elevate privileges by bypassing security controls. This may lead to data breaches, unauthorized system changes, or other malicious activities depending on the attacker's goals.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating compliance requirements such as GDPR (data protection) or HIPAA (health information privacy). Organizations may face penalties or legal consequences if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the provided PTFs immediately: SJ10878 for IBM i 7.6, SJ10917 for 7.5, SJ10934 for 7.4, and SJ10935 for 7.3. If running unsupported versions, upgrade to a supported release. Disable the Line Printer Daemon (LPD) if not required to reduce attack surface.
