Executive Summary

This is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Sonatype Nexus Repository 3. A user with specific permissions can inject malicious script into a blob store name. When this name is displayed in system health-check status messages without proper encoding, the script executes in the browsers of users viewing the page.

Detection Guidance

Check Nexus Repository versions between 3.16.0 and 3.94.x. Review blob store names for suspicious script content. Inspect system health-check status page output for unencoded scripts. Use admin audit logs to track unauthorized blob store modifications.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could perform actions as a higher-privileged user, such as an administrator, by tricking users into viewing the health-check status page. This could lead to unauthorized access, data manipulation, or other malicious activities within the Nexus Repository environment.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, which may violate compliance requirements under GDPR, HIPAA, or other regulations. Organizations must address this issue to maintain data security and regulatory adherence.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade to Nexus Repository 3.95.0 or later. Restrict nexus:blobstores:create and nexus:blobstores:update permissions to trusted administrators only. Avoid viewing the health-check status page until the upgrade is complete.
