Description

The Fluent Forms – Customizable Contact Forms, Survey, Quiz, & Conversational Form Builder plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via Notification Smartcode Values in all versions up to, and including, 6.2.11 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts that execute in the browser of an administrator (or any user with the Fluent Forms entry-viewing capability) when they view the form's entry Submission Logs in the WordPress admin dashboard. Exploitation requires that a site administrator or Fluent Forms manager has configured an email notification whose subject or static (direct) Send To value references an attacker-influenced Smartcode such as an input_password field value, a cookie value, or submission.response.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the Fluent Forms WordPress plugin. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts into form entries via Smartcode values. These scripts execute when an administrator views the Submission Logs in the WordPress admin dashboard.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress admin dashboard for suspicious form entries in Submission Logs. Look for unexpected scripts in email notification subjects or Send To fields referencing Smartcodes like input_password or cookie values.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could steal sensitive data like session cookies or credentials if an administrator views a compromised form entry. This could lead to unauthorized access to the WordPress site or further attacks on users interacting with the site.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate GDPR by exposing user data through script injection. For HIPAA, it may risk unauthorized access to protected health information if form entries contain such data. Compliance depends on the data processed by the affected forms.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Fluent Forms plugin to the latest version beyond 6.2.11. Review and remove any email notifications using Smartcodes in subject or Send To fields. Monitor form entries for unusual activity.
