Description

Kenwood DNR1007XR JKGenService Command Injection Local Privilege Escalation Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows local attackers to escalate privileges on affected installations of Kenwood DNR1007XR devices. An attacker must first obtain the ability to execute low-privileged code on the target system in order to exploit this vulnerability. The specific flaw exists within the JKGenService. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of a user-supplied string before using it to execute a system call. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to escalate privileges and execute arbitrary code in the context of root. Was ZDI-CAN-29066.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-18268 is a local privilege escalation vulnerability in the Kenwood DNR1007XR device. It exists in the JKGenService component due to improper validation of user-supplied strings before executing system calls. An attacker with low-privileged code execution can exploit this to escalate privileges to root and run arbitrary code.

Detection Guidance

Detection requires verifying the presence of the vulnerable JKGenService component on Kenwood DNR1007XR devices. Check if the service is running and inspect system logs for unusual command execution patterns. No specific commands are provided in the available resources.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers with local access to gain root privileges on the device. This could lead to full system compromise, unauthorized data access, or execution of malicious code with highest system permissions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows local attackers to escalate privileges to root and execute arbitrary code on Kenwood DNR1007XR devices. Such unauthorized access could lead to data breaches, unauthorized data modification, or system compromise, which may violate compliance requirements under GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (healthcare data security).

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the official update released by Kenwood to address the vulnerability. Ensure the JKGenService component is updated to the patched version to prevent privilege escalation. Monitor vendor advisories for further updates.
