Description

GIMP HDR File Parsing Integer Overflow Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of GIMP. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the parsing of HDR files. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of user-supplied data, which can result in an integer overflow before allocating a buffer. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-29289.

CWE ID Description
CWE-190 The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This occurs when an integer value is incremented to a value that is too large to store in the associated representation. When this occurs, the value may become a very small or negative number.

Executive Summary

This is an integer overflow vulnerability in GIMP's HDR file parsing feature. When processing malicious HDR files, the software fails to properly validate input data, leading to an integer overflow before buffer allocation. This can allow attackers to execute arbitrary code on the affected system if a user opens a malicious file or visits a malicious page.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking if your GIMP version is vulnerable. Inspect the installed version using commands like 'gimp --version' or 'apt list --installed | grep gimp' on Debian-based systems. Compare the version against the patched release.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow attackers to run malicious code on your system with the same privileges as the GIMP application. This could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, installation of malware, or disruption of system operations. User interaction is required, such as opening a malicious file.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal or sensitive data, which may violate GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and confidentiality. Organizations using vulnerable GIMP versions may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update GIMP to the latest patched version. Avoid opening untrusted HDR files or visiting suspicious websites. Disable automatic file opening for HDR files if possible. Monitor GIMP's official updates for further patches.
