Executive Summary

This vulnerability allows a remote authenticated attacker to execute arbitrary commands on IBM AIX 7.2, 7.3, and IBM PowerVM VIOS 4.1 due to improper neutralization of special elements used in an OS command.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves improper neutralization of special elements in OS commands, allowing remote authenticated attackers to execute arbitrary commands. Detection requires checking for vulnerable IBM AIX 7.2, 7.3, or PowerVM VIOS 4.1 versions and reviewing command execution logs for suspicious activity.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain control over the affected systems, leading to unauthorized access, data theft, or disruption of services. This requires the attacker to be authenticated remotely.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, which may violate compliance requirements such as GDPR or HIPAA, potentially resulting in legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply IBM-provided patches or updates for AIX 7.2, 7.3, and PowerVM VIOS 4.1 to address the improper neutralization issue. Restrict remote access to authenticated users only and monitor for unusual command execution patterns.
