Executive Summary

The Defender Security WordPress plugin before version 6.2.0 has a flaw where network-wide settings are not restricted to network administrators only. This allows any single site administrator in a multisite network to execute arbitrary code across the entire network.

Detection Guidance

Check the installed version of the Defender Security plugin. If it is below 6.2.0, the system is vulnerable. Use WordPress admin panel or run a command like 'wp plugin list' in the WordPress directory to verify the version.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with access to any single site in a multisite network could exploit this to run malicious code across all sites, potentially compromising the entire network. This could lead to data breaches, unauthorized access, or complete system takeover.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access and data breaches, which may violate compliance requirements under GDPR, HIPAA, or other regulations. Organizations could face legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust due to non-compliance.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Defender Security plugin to version 6.2.0 or later. Ensure only network administrators can modify network-wide settings to prevent unauthorized access.
