CWE ID Description
CWE-416 The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a use-after-free issue in the TabStrip component of Google Chrome on Mac. It occurs when a program tries to use memory that has already been freed, potentially leading to crashes or arbitrary code execution. An attacker who compromised the renderer process could exploit this via a specially crafted HTML page to escape the sandbox.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to Google Chrome on Mac prior to version 151.0.7922.137. Detection involves checking the installed Chrome version and monitoring for suspicious renderer process activity. Use chrome://version/ in Chrome to verify the version. If below 151.0.7922.137, update immediately. No direct commands detect exploitation, but monitoring for renderer crashes or sandbox escapes may indicate compromise.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to run malicious code on your system, bypassing security restrictions. This might lead to unauthorized access to data, installation of malware, or further compromise of your device. Users should update Chrome immediately to mitigate the risk.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly affect compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, or similar standards as it involves a sandbox escape in Google Chrome. Compliance impacts would depend on how the vulnerability is exploited in a specific environment, but no direct regulatory implications are described in the provided context.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Google Chrome to version 151.0.7922.137 or later to address the use after free vulnerability in TabStrip.
