Executive Summary

The GutenKit WordPress plugin before version 2.5.0 has a vulnerability where users with the Contributor role or higher can access Mailchimp audience metadata from the site's connected marketing account. This happens because some REST API endpoints lack proper capability checks, allowing unauthorized access to sensitive data.

Detection Guidance

Check the installed version of the GutenKit plugin. If it is between 2.4.12 and 2.4.15, the system is vulnerable. Use WordPress admin panel or run a command like 'wp plugin list' if using WP-CLI to verify the version.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows users with basic WordPress roles to retrieve mailing-list audience metadata from connected marketing accounts. This could expose subscriber lists, email addresses, and other marketing data to unauthorized individuals, potentially leading to privacy breaches or misuse of data.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR and other privacy regulations by exposing personal data without proper authorization. Organizations may face legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of customer trust if such data breaches occur due to insufficient access controls.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the GutenKit plugin to version 2.5.0 or later immediately. Remove or restrict Contributor roles if they are not necessary to limit exposure.
