Out of Bounds Write in GenieZone

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-20497, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-08-03

Last updated on: 2026-08-19

Assigner: MediaTek, Inc.

Description

In geniezone, there is a possible out of bounds write due to a missing bounds check. This could lead to local escalation of privilege if a malicious actor has already obtained the System privilege. User interaction is not needed for exploitation. Patch ID: ALPS10965550 / ALPS11393405; Issue ID: MSV-6941.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is in geniezone, where a missing bounds check allows a possible out of bounds write. This could enable local privilege escalation if an attacker already has System privilege access. No user interaction is required for exploitation.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability requires local access with System privilege to exploit, so detection should focus on system logs and privilege escalation attempts. Check for unusual activity in kernel logs or privilege-related events. No specific commands are provided in the available context.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker with existing System privileges to escalate their access further, potentially gaining control over the system. This could lead to unauthorized data access or system modifications.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly affect compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, or similar standards as it involves a local privilege escalation in a specific software component (geniezone). Compliance impacts would depend on how the affected system is used within regulated environments, but the CVE itself does not provide details on such implications.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the provided patches (ALPS10965550 / ALPS11393405) to address the missing bounds check in geniezone. Ensure the System privilege is not granted to untrusted actors to prevent potential exploitation.
