Protection Mechanism Failure in Intel Neural Compressor

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-20906, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-08-11

Last updated on: 2026-08-12

Assigner: Intel Corporation

Description

Protection mechanism failure for some Intel(R) Neural Compressor software before version v3.6 within Ring 3: User Applications may allow an escalation of privilege. Unprivileged software adversary with a privileged user combined with a low complexity attack may enable escalation of privilege. This result may potentially occur via local access when attack requirements are present without special internal knowledge and requires passive user interaction. The potential vulnerability may impact the confidentiality (high), integrity (high) and availability (high) of the vulnerable system, resulting in subsequent system confidentiality (none), integrity (none) and availability (none) impacts.

Executive Summary

This is a privilege escalation vulnerability in Intel Neural Compressor software before v3.6. An unprivileged attacker with a privileged user account could exploit it via local access with low complexity and passive user interaction. The flaw allows unauthorized access to system resources, potentially compromising confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Detection Guidance

Detection of this vulnerability requires checking the version of Intel Neural Compressor software. Ensure the installed version is v3.6 or later. No specific commands are provided in the context for detection.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to gain higher privileges on your system, potentially accessing sensitive data, modifying system settings, or disrupting services. The impact includes high confidentiality and integrity risks, leading to system compromise without requiring special internal knowledge.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and confidentiality. Non-compliance risks include legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust due to potential exposure of sensitive information.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Intel Neural Compressor software to version v3.6 or later to address the protection mechanism failure.
