Last updated on: 2026-08-26

Assigner: Intel Corporation

Description

Improper buffer restrictions for some Intel(R) PROSet/Wireless WiFi Software for Windows within Ring 0: Kernel may allow a denial of service. Unprivileged software adversary with an unauthenticated user combined with a low complexity attack may enable denial of service. This result may potentially occur via adjacent access when attack requirements are not present without special internal knowledge and requires no user interaction. The potential vulnerability may impact the confidentiality (none), integrity (low) and availability (high) of the vulnerable system, resulting in subsequent system confidentiality (none), integrity (none) and availability (high) impacts.

CWE ID Description
CWE-119 The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it reads from or writes to a memory location outside the buffer's intended boundary. This may result in read or write operations on unexpected memory locations that could be linked to other variables, data structures, or internal program data.

Executive Summary

This is a denial of service vulnerability in Intel PROSet/Wireless WiFi Software for Windows. It allows an unauthenticated attacker with low complexity to crash the system via adjacent network access without special knowledge or user interaction. The attack exploits improper buffer restrictions in the kernel component.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is related to Intel PROSet/Wireless WiFi Software for Windows and may allow denial of service via adjacent network access. Detection typically involves checking installed versions of the software and monitoring for unusual system behavior. No specific commands are provided in the given context.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to cause system crashes or instability, leading to service disruptions. Since it affects the kernel, it may require a system reboot to recover. The impact is limited to availability as confidentiality and integrity impacts are none or low.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability primarily impacts system availability, which could lead to service disruptions. For GDPR, repeated outages might affect data processing operations. For HIPAA, downtime could disrupt healthcare services. However, direct compliance impacts depend on specific implementations and mitigations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Intel PROSet/Wireless WiFi Software for Windows to the latest patched version provided by Intel. Disable wireless connectivity if not in use to reduce attack surface. Monitor system logs for unusual activity or crashes that may indicate exploitation attempts.
