Executive Summary

This vulnerability allows an authenticated user to send specially crafted requests to the Frontend validate.api.exists action, causing excessive CPU usage on the webserver. This can lead to a denial of service condition where the server becomes unresponsive or slows down significantly.

Detection Guidance

Monitor CPU usage on the Frontend webserver during request processing. Check for unusually high CPU load from the validate.api.exists action. Use system monitoring tools like top, htop, or sar to observe CPU spikes during request bursts.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability can degrade system performance, disrupt services, or make the webserver unavailable to legitimate users. It may also require additional resources to mitigate the impact.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by enabling denial of service attacks that disrupt system availability. GDPR requires maintaining service availability, while HIPAA mandates ensuring access to protected health information systems. A DoS condition may violate these requirements.

Mitigation Strategies

Restrict access to the validate.api.exists action endpoint. Implement rate limiting on the Frontend server. Update Zabbix to the latest patched version if available. Monitor and log requests to this endpoint for suspicious activity.
