Executive Summary

This vulnerability exists in strongSwan versions before 6.0.7. It involves incorrect handling of identity parsing and cloning, specifically when EAP-Identities result in an empty but non-NULL encoding. This flaw causes a double-free error when duplicates are destroyed.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability affects strongSwan versions before 6.0.7. To detect it, check the installed version of strongSwan on your system using the command: strongswan version. If the version is below 6.0.7, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to cause a denial-of-service (DoS) condition or potentially execute arbitrary code. The impact includes unauthorized access, data breaches, or system crashes due to the double-free vulnerability.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Organizations may face compliance penalties, legal consequences, and reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade strongSwan to version 6.0.7 or later to address the identity parsing and cloning issue that leads to double-free vulnerabilities.
