Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a DLL Hijacking issue in CGM Germany's CompuGroup Medical ISIS MED Version 2510.1.0.20 software. A malicious DLL can be placed in a directory where the application expects a legitimate DLL. Since the directory allows user write access, a low-privileged user can exploit this to load the malicious DLL with the application's privileges, leading to privilege escalation.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor directories where CGM ISIS MED loads DLLs using tools like Procmon. Look for unexpected DLL loads from user-writable paths. Check for suspicious DLL files in directories like the application's installation folder or system paths with write permissions.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on your system with the privileges of the CGM ISIS MED application. This could lead to unauthorized access, data theft, or further compromise of the system where the software is installed.

Compliance Impact

The vulnerability allows arbitrary code execution via DLL hijacking, which could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive patient or healthcare data. This could violate GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules for protected health information if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately restrict write permissions on directories where CGM ISIS MED loads DLLs. Ensure only trusted DLLs are present in application directories. Apply patches or updates from CGM if available. Monitor for unusual DLL loads or privilege escalation attempts.
