Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an incorrect access control issue in the setMacFilterRules function of TOTOLINK T6 firmware version 4.1.5cu.748_B20211015. It allows unauthenticated attackers to modify device access control settings by sending a specially crafted POST request to the vulnerable endpoint /cgi-bin/cstecgi.cgi.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking for unauthorized changes to MAC filter rules via crafted POST requests to /cgi-bin/cstecgi.cgi. Monitor network traffic for POST requests to this endpoint and inspect logs for unusual access control modifications.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to bypass access controls on the device, potentially allowing unauthorized network access or manipulation of security settings without authentication.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to bypass access controls, potentially enabling unauthorized access to sensitive data or device settings. Such access could violate compliance requirements under GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (healthcare data security) by exposing personal or protected information without proper authorization.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the TOTOLINK T6 firmware to the latest version. Disable remote administration if not needed and restrict access to the web interface via firewall rules. Monitor for unauthorized POST requests to /cgi-bin/cstecgi.cgi.
