Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an incorrect access control issue in the setParentalRules function of TOTOLINK T6 firmware version 4.1.5cu.748_B20211015. It allows unauthenticated attackers to change parental-control settings by sending a specially crafted POST request to the vulnerable endpoint /cgi-bin/cstecgi.cgi.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor network traffic for POST requests to /cgi-bin/cstecgi.cgi with parameters related to parental control. Check logs for unauthorized changes to parental-control settings.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to bypass parental controls, potentially allowing unauthorized access to restricted content or devices on the network. This could affect home networks where parental controls are used to manage children's internet access.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to alter parental-control behavior via crafted POST requests, which could lead to unauthorized changes in network access controls. This may impact compliance with standards requiring strict access controls, such as GDPR (data protection) or HIPAA (healthcare data security), by enabling unauthorized modifications to network policies.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the TOTOLINK T6 firmware to the latest version. Restrict access to the /cgi-bin/cstecgi.cgi endpoint via firewall rules. Disable parental-control features if not in use.
