Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an incorrect access control issue in the clearSyslog function of TOTOLINK T6 firmware version 4.1.5cu.748_B20211015. It allows unauthenticated attackers to erase system logs by sending a specially crafted POST request to the vulnerable endpoint /cgi-bin/cstecgi.cgi.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor network traffic for POST requests to /cgi-bin/cstecgi.cgi with parameters targeting the clearSyslog function. Check system logs for unauthorized log erasure attempts or unusual POST request patterns to this endpoint.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow attackers to delete system logs, potentially covering their tracks after exploiting other vulnerabilities or performing unauthorized actions on the device. This makes it harder to detect and investigate security incidents.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to erase system logs via crafted POST requests. This could impact compliance by preventing proper audit logging required under standards like GDPR and HIPAA, which mandate secure and immutable logging for accountability and data protection.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the TOTOLINK T6 firmware to the latest version to patch the incorrect access control in clearSyslog. Disable remote access to the web interface if not required. Monitor network traffic for POST requests to /cgi-bin/cstecgi.cgi with log-related parameters.
