Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an incorrect access control issue in the clearTracerouteLog function of TOTOLINK T6 firmware version 4.1.5cu.748_B20211015. It allows unauthenticated attackers to erase traceroute logs by sending a specially crafted POST request to the /cgi-bin/cstecgi.cgi endpoint.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking for unauthorized POST requests to /cgi-bin/cstecgi.cgi targeting the clearTracerouteLog function. Monitor web server logs for suspicious POST requests to this endpoint with parameters attempting to clear traceroute logs.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow attackers to delete important network diagnostic logs without authentication. This might hinder troubleshooting efforts, obscure evidence of malicious activity, or prevent detection of unauthorized network changes.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to erase traceroute logs via crafted POST requests. This could impact compliance by preventing proper logging and audit trail maintenance required under standards like GDPR and HIPAA.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the TOTOLINK T6 firmware to the latest version if a patch is available. Disable remote access to the web interface if not required. Restrict access to /cgi-bin/cstecgi.cgi via network firewall rules. Monitor logs for any signs of exploitation attempts.
