Description

Incus is a system container and virtual machine manager. Prior to version 7.2.0, missing authorization checks exist for instance copying where an attacker knowing the name of a project that they don't have access to and the name of an instance in that project can copy the instance to a new project. This issue could allow an attacker to access secrets in instances they are not authorized to access. Version 7.2.0 patches the issue.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in Incus (versions before 7.2.0) allows an attacker to bypass project restrictions when copying instances across projects. It occurs due to missing authorization checks during the instance copying process. An attacker knowing the name of a restricted project and an instance within it can copy that instance to a project they have access to, potentially gaining access to sensitive data.

Detection Guidance

Check Incus version with 'incus version' to confirm if it is below 7.2.0. Review project and instance access logs for unauthorized copy operations between projects.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could access secrets in instances they are not authorized to access by copying them to a project they control. This could lead to unauthorized data exposure or compromise of sensitive information stored in those instances.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal or sensitive data, violating compliance requirements under GDPR, HIPAA, or other regulations. Organizations using vulnerable versions may face legal and regulatory penalties due to data breaches.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Incus to version 7.2.0 or later immediately. Review and restrict project access permissions to prevent unauthorized instance copying.
