Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: xfrm: reject optional IPTFS templates in outbound policies syzbot reported a stack-out-of-bounds read in xfrm_state_find() which flows from xfrm_tmpl_resolve_one(). Commit 3d776e31c841 ("xfrm: Reject optional tunnel/BEET mode templates in outbound policies") disallowed optional tunnel and BEET in outbound policies to prevent this. Later when IPTFS added, it was not covered by that fix and can still trigger the out-of-bounds read; Extend the check to disallow optional IPTFS in outbound policies as well. IPTFS should be identical to tunnel mode. IN and FWD policies are not affected: xfrm_tmpl_resolve_one() is only reachable via the outbound path. Executive Summary

This is a stack-out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the Linux kernel's xfrm_state_find() function. It occurs when optional IPTFS templates are used in outbound policies. The issue arises because IPTFS mode was not covered by a previous fix that blocked optional tunnel and BEET modes in outbound policies. This allows memory corruption when processing certain network packets.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by checking for outbound XFRM policies using IPTFS mode. Run 'ip xfrm policy show' to list policies and look for 'mode iptfs' in outbound policies. If such policies exist, they may be vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow an attacker to cause a kernel crash or execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges. It may lead to denial-of-service conditions or potential privilege escalation on affected Linux systems using IPTFS in outbound policies.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately remove any outbound XFRM policies using IPTFS mode with 'ip xfrm policy del' commands. Update the Linux kernel to a patched version that includes the fix for this issue.
