Executive Summary

Jenkins 2.575 and earlier, including LTS 2.568.1, has a flaw where file paths in parameter names are not properly validated. This allows attackers with specific permissions to perform path traversal attacks, enabling them to write files to arbitrary locations on the Jenkins controller's file system.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow unauthorized file writes on the Jenkins controller. Attackers with Item/Configure or Item/Build permissions could place malicious files anywhere on the system, potentially leading to remote code execution, data theft, or system compromise.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or modification of sensitive data, violating GDPR's data integrity and confidentiality requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Compliance may be compromised if systems are not patched.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Jenkins to a version later than 2.575 or LTS 2.568.1 to resolve the path traversal issue. Ensure only trusted users have Item/Configure and Item/Build permissions to prevent unauthorized file writes.
