Executive Summary

This vulnerability is in the redhat search-v2-operator component. A user with specific administrative permissions on a managed cluster can inject arbitrary configuration data. This allows them to override critical settings and replace container images, leading to container image injection on the managed cluster which may compromise its integrity.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with administrative access could exploit this to replace legitimate container images with malicious ones. This could lead to unauthorized code execution, data breaches, or full control over the managed cluster's operations.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules. Compliance may be compromised due to potential loss of data confidentiality and integrity.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately revoke administrative permissions for users who do not strictly require them on managed clusters. Review and restrict access to the search-v2-operator configuration settings to prevent unauthorized modifications. Monitor container images for unexpected changes or replacements.
