Executive Summary

This is a cross-site request forgery (CSRF) vulnerability in FreePBX Framework 17.0. It allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to perform administrative actions on behalf of an authenticated administrator. The vulnerability exists because the /admin/ajax.php dispatcher lacks CSRF tokens and relies only on a Referer header check, which can be bypassed if the request is sent without a Referer header or from a same-site context.

Detection Guidance

To detect this CSRF vulnerability, monitor network traffic for admin actions in FreePBX without proper CSRF tokens. Check if requests to /admin/ajax.php lack CSRF tokens and bypass Referer header checks. Inspect logs for unauthorized administrative operations triggered by external requests.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could trick an administrator into visiting a malicious page, which would then execute unauthorized administrative actions on the FreePBX system. This could lead to unauthorized changes, data theft, or system compromise. The impact is high as it allows full administrative control without authentication.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access and modifications, potentially violating data protection requirements under GDPR and HIPAA. It may result in unauthorized disclosure or alteration of sensitive data, leading to compliance breaches and legal consequences.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update FreePBX Framework to the latest patched version. Implement strict Referer header validation on the server side. Disable AJAX requests without proper CSRF tokens. Restrict administrative access to trusted networks only.
