Incorrect Authorization in Kibana Fleet Leads to Privilege Escalation

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-72630, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Description

Incorrect Authorization (CWE-863) in Kibana Fleet can lead to privilege escalation via Privilege Abuse (CAPEC-122). Fleet restricts some callers to managing integration policies for one specific integration. When an existing integration policy was updated, that restriction was evaluated against the integration recorded on the stored policy rather than against the replacement integration supplied with the update. An authenticated user holding only the Elastic Defend endpoint policy management privilege was therefore able to convert an endpoint policy they administer into a policy for a different integration, and to supply that integration's configuration at the same time.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-72630 is an Incorrect Authorization vulnerability in Kibana Fleet that allows privilege escalation. Fleet restricts users to managing policies for specific integrations, but the system incorrectly evaluated restrictions against the stored policy's integration instead of the updated one. This lets an authenticated user with limited privileges convert their managed policy into one for a different integration and supply its configuration.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Kibana Fleet component is running an affected version (8.19.20, 9.4.5, or 9.5.1). Verify integration policies for unauthorized modifications or unexpected changes in assigned integrations.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with minimal privileges could escalate their access to manage unauthorized integrations, potentially altering configurations or gaining control over systems they shouldn't access. This could lead to data exposure, system compromise, or unauthorized actions within the Kibana Fleet environment.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate compliance requirements by enabling unauthorized access to sensitive data or systems. For GDPR, it may lead to unauthorized data processing or access. For HIPAA, it could allow improper handling of protected health information. Organizations must patch to maintain compliance.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Kibana to a patched version (8.19.20+, 9.4.5+, or 9.5.1+) immediately. If upgrading is not possible, consider disabling Fleet integration policy management as a temporary measure.
